Learner driver insurance
You may not be aware that insurance is available for the learner driver, which doesn’t affect the insurance of the vehicle owner. This is how it works:
- You register with the insurer, giving details of the vehicle to be used and the details of the learner to be insured
- You will be given your quote
- You pay for your first month’s insurance
- After the first month you can choose not to buy more
- At a suitable time for you, you can choose to buy another month, or just a week, to suit your circumstances and your pocket
- You can continue like this for as long as you like
- During the time you are insured, you will be building up a no-claims discount, provided, of course, you have no claims!
This works particularly well if the learner cannot have regular practice, or intends buying their own car after passing the test, as you only buy the insurance you need.
There are 2 major players in this arena that I recommend:
- Provisional Marmelade (or download this brochure: PM_brochure )
The first link will take you to a page on their website that has my logo on it. This company also assists young drivers in buying their first car as a package which includes the insurance. This makes it a very competitive offer compared with buying your own car, which might be a very cheap ‘banger’, then adding insurance that will be at the top rate (often due to the age of the car, which is considered less safe by insurers).
- Collingwood insurers were the first to introduce insurance for provisional licence holders and a number of my pupils have used their services. Click the banner to go to the website and compare which company seems right for you.
